11 Alive’s Catie Beck has spent the past month investigating the types of football helmets used in area high schools. Researchers at Virginia Tech found that depending on what helmet you use, you may be able to reduce your concussion risk by as much as 50 percent. In their study, a five-star rating of the most commonly used football helmets was used.
The Virginia Tech rating system goes from a “Not Recommended” rating, and proceeds from one to five stars. 11 Alive received information from close to 200 high schools in metro Atlanta and asked for records verifying which makes and models of helmets the schools were using. In total, 44 schools in metro Atlanta are using the “not Recommended,” one-star or two-star helmets.
At Central Gwinnett and all of Gwinnett County Public Schools, safety of our student athletes is our number one concern. With the help of certified trainers from Gwinnett Medical Center, we IMPACT (pre-test for concussions) test all of our student athletes before each season. All of our football helmets were in the 3, 4, and 5 star ratings in the study. We continue to take concussions very seriously, and with that, we continue to make sure the helmets and equipment our student athletes are using is in line with any certifications, testing, and/or studies.
